Mountains, Lakes & Lederhosen

6 days from £689 per person*

*based on sharing on a twin/double basis and a minimum of 40 paying passengers

  • Zell am See

Overview

Austria has provided dramatic Alpine backdrops for films such as ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Rush’ and James Bond’s ‘The Quantum of Solace’ and ‘Spectre’. Its vistas have inspired musical masterpieces by Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven and it was in the Austrian village of Oberndorf bei Salzburg that the famous carol, ‘Silent Night’, was composed by Joseph Mohr. Let Austria’s charms inspire you too!

This packaged itinerary based at our lovely family hotel in Zell am See will provide you with the best of both worlds: warm sun and ample swimming opportunities … and snow-capped mountains! We can ‘gorge’ ourselves on stunning panoramic mountain views, fascinating museums, excellent Alpine cuisine, waterfalls and dramatic gorge walks. Please note that this itinerary would not be suitable for wheelchair-bound customers.

Itinerary

Day 1
Our flight departs selected UK airport. Upon arrival we will be met by our coach escort. We transfer to our hotel and arrive to a warm welcome from the staff and will enjoy some time perhaps relaxing on the Lido by the lake prior to dinner this evening.

Day 2
We will spend today exploring our beautiful lakeside resort at leisure. We can walk to the end of the Esplanade and take a pleasure boat trip across Lake Zell and watch the idyllic mountain range glide by. With our Zell am See-Kaprun Card, we can make lake crossings as often as we like and enjoy one panorama pleasure cruise during our stay.

Day 3
Today, we will board the Schmittenhöhebahn Cable Car and ascend 3,000 metres up to the summit of the region’s highest mountain from which we can enjoy views of over 30 mountains in the Eastern Alps whilst perhaps enjoying a cup of coffee and slice of cake at the Schmitten Café. We will then descend the mountain and travel to Vötter’s Fahrzeug Museum if vintage cars are of interest to us, before visiting Sigmund Thun gorge in Kaprun with its stunning waterfall. The path through the gorge is effectively a boardwalk comprising a number of stepped sections (no disabled access). We will then take another cable car to the summit of Kitzsteinhorn for an outstanding view and bizarrely snowy experience in the height of summer!

Day 4
This morning, we will travel to the Mining and Gothic Museum (closed Mondays) in Leogang, one of the oldest and most well-known mining regions in Austria. A 16th Century mine steward’s house, inn and Saint Anne’s Chapel still exist and we can learn about a typical miner’s life producing silver, nickel, copper and cobalt (used to produce blue dye and exported to Murano glassworks). We will visit the smelting works and tourist mine in the village of Hütten as well as the gothic interior of the chapel before perhaps enjoying lunch at the Unterberghaus. This afternoon, we will discover more about the rich folk traditions typical of the region by visiting the Museum Schloss Ritzen housed within a castle and considered to be one of the most important museums in the state of Salzburg.

Day 5
Today, we will gorge ourselves on … gorges! Vorderkaser Gorge will be our first visit of the day and we can wander through the boardwalk and experience rushing streams, fascinating rock formations and stunning views before making our way to another amazing Gorge in Seisenberg. We can spend the afternoon at leisure in our resort.

Day 6
Today, we will leave our lovely resort and transfer to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
