From Monet to Fontainebleau
5 days from £439 per person*

This tour will inspire customers who appreciate world class art, classical architecture and magnificent landscapes. They will simply be overwhelmed by the beauty of the most stunning and historically important locations in central France – Giverny, Vernon, Versailles, Château De Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau – all of which can be explored from our picture perfect rural location south west of Paris.
We depart selected pick-ups and journey to Dover/Folkestone for our short sea crossing to Calais. We continue our journey to Le Coudray and on arrival we may relax with a glass of sparkling wine on the terrace overlooking the swimming pool or in the lounge area while our bags are taken to our room. We have time to settle in prior to dinner this evening.
After an early breakfast this morning, we can travel northwards to Monet’s country retreat in Giverny where we will explore the impressionist painter’s charming pink house and iconic gardens. We can then relax in the gardens at our leisure, admiring the Japanese bridge and famous waterlily pond, before visiting the small but excellent art gallery, Musee des Impressionnismes, where we can see a superb collection of paintings by artists whom Monet influenced. We can then travel to the pretty neighbouring village of Vernon and discover over 200 half timbered houses with ancient doors and carved timbers, wrought iron shop signs, cobbled paths … and the famous Old Mill (painted by Monet). Enjoy lunch here and spend the afternoon exploring the church, museums, the village and the banks of the River Seine at leisure.
This morning, we will enjoy time at leisure to try out the hotels facilities followed by lunch. This afternoon we will travel southwards, through one of France’s largest and most beautiful forests and former royal hunting ground: Fontainebleau. In the midst of this forest is France’s largest Medieval castle and château, which was the residence of French monarchs from Louis VII through to Napoleon III. Today it houses four national museums within its palatial walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We may choose to enjoy a horse and carriage trip around the grounds in order to appreciate the sheer magnitude of the stunning gardens without wearing out our footwear! The large pond, canal and the Gardens of Diane are worthy of particular note. We then travel to the 17th century masterpiece of château Vaux-le-Vicomte and experience one of their candlelit evenings with the breath-taking flickering view of 2 000 candles lighting up the estate. An enchanting and romantic evening that will give visitors a new perspective on the stunning estate. (Please note lunch on this day replaces dinner).
After breakfast this morning, we will make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Palace of Versailles. Considered to be one of the most magnificent achievements of 18th Century French architecture and design, the palace began as Louis XIII’s hunting lodge before his son transformed it into the marvel that we see today. Three successive kings lived here until the French Revolution and the Hall of Mirrors, the Royal Apartments and the Museum of the History of France along with the astonishingly beautiful palatial grounds are likely to keep us entertained for the entire day.
Sadly, after breakfast, we will bid farewell to our hotel in the French countryside and make our way homewards.
