Bavaria is home to the most romantic castles in the world including King Ludwig’s iconic Neuschwanstein and the intensely ornate and flamboyant Linderhof Palace. We will also experience the breathtaking scenery and views of the Alps on Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze.
Day 1 – Our flight departs from the UK. Upon arrival we will be met by our coach for the transfer to our hotel in Lermoos. Following check-in we enjoy dinner with the remainder of the evening to spend at leisure.
Day 2 – Today we make the journey with our guide to the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein. Constructed by King Ludwig II in the 19th Century, this castle remains one of the finest examples of German romantic castles and complements the fantastic Hohenschwangau Castle, which forms our next destination of the day. Actually completed before Neuschwanstein, this residence was the summer residence of Ludwig’s father, King Maximilian, and was where Ludwig spent much of his childhood. We continue onwards to enjoy free time in the lovely town of Fussen before returning to our hotel for dinner.
Day 3 – This morning we commence our guided excursion with a visit to Ettal Abbey, a stunning Benedictine Monastery whose inhabitants are known for their beer and cheese production skills, before we continue onto the beautiful castle and gardens of Schloss Linderhof. This luxurious Rococo residence in Louis XV style is said to be where King Ludwig spent most of his time. Enamoured with Versailles, Ludwig borrowed many features from that magnificent palace and replicated them here in miniature. We journey onwards a short distance to the Bavarian village of Oberammergau, where we will enjoy free time exploring the town made famous by the Passion Play that takes place here every 10 years. Enjoy time here, before we make a leisurely return to our hotel for dinner.
Day 4 – We enjoy a day at leisure in Lermoos today, where we can take the opportunity to explore this typical Tyrolean town. Lermoos has been a settlement since c49BC and lies 1000m above sea level, forming both an excellent summer and winter location. Dinner is at our hotel this evening.
Day 5 – This morning, we travel with our guide to the pretty town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, formerly the home of the composer, Richard Strauss where we will board the rack railway for the stunning journey towards the summit of the Zugspitze – Germany’s highest mountain, which straddles the border between Germany and Austria. After we take time to enjoy the amazing views, we take our descent back down the Zugspitze arriving back in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where time will be at leisure to explore the town before returning to our hotel for dinner.
Day 6 – Today is at leisure, providing us with the opportunity to relax or to individually explore this beautiful area. Dinner at the hotel this evening.
