The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Liguria region of Italy, “The Five Lands” is composed of five villages set amid some of the most dramatic and stunning coastal scenery you could ever imagine. Magical Cliffside paths may tempt the adventurous, but for us mere mortals the 19th-century railway line cuts through a series of coastal tunnels and ferries the less brave from village to village. Thankfully cars are banned and their notable absence helps to create an authentic atmosphere. Portofino is a small Italian fishing village, and tourist resort, located in the province of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is crowded round its small harbour, which we will visit along with a return ferry to Santa Margherita.
Day 1 – We board our flight to Italy and upon arrival we are greeted by our guide, who will transfer us, by coach, to our base in Viareggio and our hotel for the next five nights. We will enjoy a welcome glass of prosecco before dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 – Today we travel to Manarola where we will have time to explore the village before we join the train that takes us through the wonderful and colourful world of Le Cinque Terre, the ‘Five Lands’. These quaint and incredibly scenic fishing villages can really only be visited by boat or train due to their location on the rugged coastline. We’ll explore Monterosso, a sumptuous village with plenty of opportunity to browse the shops and enjoy a seafood lunch (not included). There will also be the chance to visit Vernazza before we take the train to La Spezia, where we meet our coach for the journey back to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 – Today we enjoy a day at leisure. Once a fishing village, Viareggio is now a thriving resort with a long beachside promenade and shops. There is plenty to explore. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 – This morning we enjoy an excursion to beautiful Lucca, where the elegant Old Town is still enclosed by its ancient city walls within which are some of the finest examples of the “Pisan Romanesque” style architecture. Lucca Cathedral has a magnificent Romanesque facade as well as important Renaissance art. Being one of the oldest cities in Tuscany, it is home to a maze of narrow cobbled streets, beautiful churches and chapels. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 5 – A day out visiting the most fashionable and stylish resorts of the Italian Riviera. We travel to the attractive palm lined resort of Santa Margherita and from here we’ll enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the coast, around the headland and into the chic and famous resort of Portofino. Set in an incredibly scenic enclave, this internationally renowned gem regularly entertains the world’s jet set. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 6 – Sadly, today we check out of our hotel and journey to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
