Overview


Northern Cyprus may have a clouded past and been seen as a forgotten frontier but cast those dark days aside and you’ll find a warm, welcoming land where you can expect the unexpected at every turn. During this 8 day tour, you’ll have the chance to relax and soaks up some winter sun as well as enjoy a couple of included excursion, with further trips available as optional. There are fascinating museums, castles and monasteries filled with history and authentic local cuisine served by warm, friendly and fiercely patriotic people. Our trip will include excursions to the forgotten town of Famagusta,  and the capital, Nicosia with its wonderful markets.

Itinerary

Day 1 – We depart from the UK for our flight to Larnaca. Upon arrival, we are met by a local guide and transferred across the border to the Onar Village, Kyrenia. After check in we enjoy a welcome cocktail followed by dinner.

Day 2 – Free day to enjoy your surroundings and relax. Alternatively an excursion can be organised such as: A visit to St Hilarion Castle, and the the village of Bellapais which was the home for some years of Lawrence Durrell, who wrote about life in Cyprus in his book Bitter Lemons. The jewel of the village is Bellapais Abbey which has a wonderful position with a long view down to Kyrenia and the Mediterranean sea. There will be time to enjoy lunch at Kyrenia harbour before a visit to Kyrenia Castle.

Day 3 – Today will be a visit to the historic old harbour town of Famagusta which is completely surrounded by its magnificent Venetian Walls and boasts the magnificent St Nicholas Cathedral. There is still an area sealed off area known as the Ghost Town”. We’ll visit the ruins of the Royal palace built by the Venetians. This afternoon we visit Salamis ruins. This ancient site covers an area of one square mile extending along the sea shore. We’ll also visit St Barnabas Monastery, built to commemorate the foremost saint of Cyprus.

Day 4 – Free day or an optional excursion can be arranged such as: the Crusader Castle of Buffavento which at 955m above sea level stands the highest of the three crusader castles. Then visit the Antiphonitis Byzantine Church and have a picnic/BBQ lunch with wine.

Day 5 – Free day or an optional excursion can be organised. Guzelyurt is the citrus growing region of Northern Cyprus. We travel along the coast to Vouni and the hill top ancient Persian Palace. Lunch by the sea is included as is and a visit to the ancient Greco Roman City of Soli with time to view the Basilica floor which is covered with mosaics.

Day 6 – Nicosia, the capital of the island of Cyprus, has an ancient centre and the modern, bustling area too. Narrow winding streets in the old town lead from the Cyprus Museum, with its collection artefacts, to the thick city wall. There are plenty of traditional restaurants and an increasingly vibrant cafe and cultural scene. This is where all the locals shop so there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the shops and eateries, or the churches and mosques.

Day 7 – Day at leisure or an optional excursion to the Karpaz Peninsular. Visiting the Pan Handle we’ll sense its natural beauty and view spectacular sandy beaches where the turtles breed. Driving through the wild donkey reserve to the tip of the peninsular to view the Apostolos Andreas Monastery. It was once the Lourdes of Cyprus, served not by an organized community of monks but by a changing group of volunteer priests and laymen. We’ll enjoy lunch by the sea and then visit the Roman Basilica of Ayias Triaswith its wonderful mosaics.

Day 8 – We transfer back across the border to Larnaca for our flight back to the UK.
