5 days from £289 per person*
*based on sharing on a twin/double basis and a minimum of 40 paying passengers
Ranked by many as the most glamorous of the West Country resorts along the English Riviera, and renowned for its mild climate and marvellous beaches, Torquay is unsurpassed in scenic beauty and has a wonderfully continental atmosphere that combines modern facilities with an elegance of time gone by. Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and spent the best part of her adult years on the English Riviera penning her legendary novels and creating two of this country’s best loved detectives. During our tour we include a visit to the novelist’s former home – Greenway House, where we arrive by ferry along the River Dart!
Day 1 – Depart our local area by coach and travel to Tyntesfield House (NT), a spectacular Victorian Gothic Revival House set in lovely parkland and gardens. After free time here to explore and obtain lunch (not included) we continue the journey south west to Torquay, to check into our hotel. There will be time to relax before dinner at the hotel. An alternative en route stop can be made to better suit the group.
Day 2 – This morning we travel to Buckfastleigh starting the day with a visit to Buckfast Abbey where it has been home to an abbey for almost a 1000 years. We will visit the Otter & Butterfly Sanctuary before boarding the South Devon Railway for a scenic train ride to Totnes. On arrival in Totnes, there will be free time prior to our coach meeting us for the return to our hotel. Dinner at hotel.
Day 3 – After breakfast we travel to Dartmouth for a little free time to explore the town before boarding the Greenway ferry (as foot passengers) which takes us along the river to Greenway House (NT). There is an uphill walk to the house from the boat, taking 10-15 minutes, however a car is available to transfer the less mobile. Greenway, a Georgian mansion, was the home of Agatha Christie and described by the author as “the loveliest place in the world”. After the visit to the house & gardens we make our way back to the ferry for the return to Dartmouth to meet our coach for the journey back to the hotel. Dinner at hotel.
Day 4 – Today we will enjoy a guided tour of Dartmoor. We will see the House of Marbles at Bovey Tracey before travelling through Moretonhampstead, Postbridge & Two Bridges to Princetown. There will be some time at leisure in Princetown to obtain lunch (not included) before continuing over Dartmoor to Yelverton. Dinner at the hotel
Day 5 – After checking out of the hotel, we travel to Killerton (NT). Killerton House and Gardens are a delightful place to explore. The house was home of the Acland family from 1755 until 1944 until it was given to the National Trust. The owners in 1898 transformed what is a small country house into a homely place for country house entertaining and it still has that atmosphere today. Early afternoon we continue the homeward journey.
An alternative en route stop can be made to better suit the group.
