A warm welcome, scenic countryside and amazing heritage awaits us in Northumbria. As well as the contrasting cities of Newcastle and Durham, there are an array of castles, gardens and historic homes. A highlight of our suggested itinerary is Beamish Open Air Museum, which tells the story of life in the north of England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s.
Day 1 – We depart our local area for the journey to Northumbria and our hotel. Comfort stops can be made along the way, or possibly a visit a National Trust property or town of interest (dependent on route). Dinner will be served at our hotel this evening.
Day 2 – After breakfast we make our way to Beamish Open Air Museum, for a full day exploring the extensive site which is set in 300 acres of beautiful Durham countryside. The Town, Pit Village, Home Farm and Pockerley Old Hall are brought to life by costumed folk and the buildings are not replicas, but have been brought, brick by brick, from around the region and reconstructed. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 – This morning we travel into Newcastle and Gateshead. Newcastle, located on the north bank of the River Tyne and Gateshead on the south bank are connected by seven bridges across a spectacular river landscape to form a diverse and extremely vibrant visitor destination. From the elegant sweeping streets designed in the 1830’s, the Victorian Grainger Market and world class heritage and cultural attractions, there’s something to suit all tastes. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 – Today will be spent at leisure in and around the beautiful city of Durham. You may wish to visit Durham Cathedral, one of the greatest Norman buildings in England. Next to the Cathedral is Durham Castle, and together this UNESCO World Heritage Site forms a stunning city panorama. The city’s historic streets contain a selection of independent boutiques and quirky craft shops. Return to hotel. Dinner at hotel.
Day 5 – Checking out of our hotel we commence our homeward journey, with an appropriate stop or visit en-route.
