Discover a city steeped in history and culture on the banks of the River Danube. Budapest is blessed with an abundance of beautiful baroque, neoclassical, eclectic and art nouveau architecture whilst bearing the scars of WWII and the 1956 uprising. Our tour takes us to the most important sites of the city, as well as excursion out to a Royal Palace and an artist’s town. An optional evening river cruise provides an opportunity to view the city from a different perspective, where all the main sights are beautifully lit.
Day 1 – Fly from the UK to Budapest. On arrival we will be met by our local guide and coach for the transfer to our hotel to check in. Dinner at the hotel
Day 2 – After breakfast we enjoy a guided tour of the city, starting on the Pest side – with highlights including Parliament Building, The Opera House, Heroes Square and The Szechenyi Spa Baths. The Parliament building is completely symmetrical, allowing for two identical parliament halls; one used for politics and the other for guided tours. The façade faces the River Danube and is decorated with statues of Hungarian monarchs and military rulers. There will be time for coffee & cake at Alexandra Bookcafé. Located on the second floor of the Alexandra bookstore, the café is adorned with chandeliers and a fresco-style ceiling, painted by Karoly Lotz. Szechenyi Spa Baths is one of the best and largest spa baths in Europe with its 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor pools and our 15 minute tour gives us a glimpse of the local culture of the traditional spa. We return to our hotel late afternoon to freshen up, before an optional dinner cruise on the River Danube.
Day 3 – This morning we explore the other side of the city. Crossing the Chain bridge we visit Buda, and the “Cultural Avenue”, starting with the Buda Castle District which covers a wide range of museums, and we include the Hungarian National Gallery, Mathias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. The area retains its “Olde Worlde” feel with the traditional shops and restaurants still there and cobbled narrow streets. Due to its location the views across the Danube to the Pest side are spectacular. The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public collection documenting and presenting the rise and development of the fine arts in Hungary. This afternoon is free to enjoy any aspect of the city you choose.
Day 4 – Today we visit the picturesque town of Szentendre for a guided tour and some free time. The riverside town boasts well-preserved 18th century baroque-style churches, museums and merchant houses and has a Mediterranean feel that few other Hungarian towns have, and is well known for its art and galleries. The main gallery exhibits local artists’ work. We will also find vendors along the cobbled streets selling local delicacies, wines, embroidered tablecloths and local produce. At the end of the afternoon we travel by boat along the Danube from Szentendre back to Budapest.
Day 5 – After breakfast we check out of our hotel and visit Godollo Royal Palace, situated outside the city. The Palace was built by Count Antal Grassalkovich I, one of the most notable aristocrats of the 18th century. The unique architecture served as an exemplary model for other Hungarian palaces of the Baroque period. It was later presented as a coronation gift to Emperor Francis Joseph I and Queen Elizabeth for use as a residence. Afterwards we continue to Budapest airport for our return flight to the UK.
