Surrounded by steep rugged mountain cliffs that drop dramatically into the deep blue Mediterranean, Sorrento and the Amalfi coastline form an area of outstanding natural beauty, breath-taking views and unique character. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most enchanting coastlines in Europe, thanks to its spectacular landscape and heritage. The coastal road is famous for its hairpin bends and fantastic views. During our tour we will come across beautiful towns such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello – all located near small beaches where deep valleys run down to the sea. We also include excursions to the island of Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples and the stunning Royal Palace at Caserta.
Meet at the airport for our flight to Italy. Upon arrival we will be met by our local English speaking guide and transferred by executive coach to the Pietra di Luna Hotel, Maiori, where we will be based for the next 7 nights. Following check-in we enjoy dinner with the remainder of the evening to spend at leisure.
After breakfast we take a full day guided excursion along the Amalfi Coast. Regarded as the most spectacular drive in Europe, the winding cliff top road offers breath-taking panoramic views at every turn. We stop just above Positano, yet another splendid jewel of this coastline which boasts picturesque pink and white villas perched against the hillside. We then travel to Amalfi, with its cluster of white houses rising up the hillside. From here we visit Ravello, nestled eleven hundred feet above the sea in the mountainside. We also visit Villa Rufolo, which gave Richard Wagner the inspiration to create the Parsifal Opera. The gardens of the Villa are the setting for the Wagner Festival which takes place each summer. We return to the hotel early evening. Dinner at our hotel.
Today we enjoy a guided excursion to Pompeii. Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The town is high on the list of Wonders of the World and the excavations begun in the 18th Century are still carried out today. We will experience the ancient streets of Pompeii with its baths, forums and villas built by the Romans in the year 80 BC and marvel at the preserved frescos which adorned the walls and floors of the villas. We return to our hotel for dinner.
Our guided excursion today is to Herculaneum, located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Here we will get a clear idea as to the magnitude of the volcanic eruption. The good state of preservation of the site is due to the flows having rapidly filled the buildings, preventing them from collapsing. Volcanic rock then covered the site for 1700 years forming an airtight seal. As a consequence there are many well-preserved buildings, many with the upper storeys still intact with beautiful frescos and mosaics on walls and floors. We then continue to the Naples Museum of Archaeology, the largest Roman architectural museum in the world and home to objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum. We can also admire the Farnese collection of Roman sculptures, including those of the Caracalla Baths. We return to our hotel for dinner.
Today we travel to Sorrento, where we enjoy the full day at leisure and experience why this is one of the most popular destinations in Italy. We will be able to wander the winding alleys that boast a great variety of trattorias, cafes, bars and shops and feel the vibrant yet romantic atmosphere this beautiful town has to offer. We return to Maiori and our hotel for dinner.
Today we have a full day guided excursion to the island of Capri, otherwise known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens and a favoured resort of the Roman emperors. Our visit will include a guided tour and free time to explore the wonderful sights on our own. There are plenty of attractions to explore: the Faraglioni Rocks, the Blue Grotto (a beautiful cave with a tiny opening to the sea that opens and closes with the tide), Villa Jovis (a splendid residence of the Emperor Tiberius), the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the Cave of Tiberius and the Lighthouse Tower. We may also wish to visit Anacapri and its surrounding villas such as Villa San Michele built at the turn of the 20th Century on the grounds of an ancient villa once owned by Tiberius. The baroque Church of San Michele Arcangelo is also worth visiting, with its mosaic floor depicting the expulsion of Adam & Eve from paradise. We return to our hotel for dinner.
Our destination today is the town of Caserta, home to the Reggia di Caserta, or Royal Palace. The palace itself covers eleven acres, has 120 hectares of parkland and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon in the 1700s, it was designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in the Italian Baroque style and is one of his most famous works, and draws together the architecture of the Royal Palace at Versailles and the Escorial Palace in Madrid. Inside there are 1,200 rooms and 34 staircases; the scale and grandeur are difficult to appreciate until you are there. We return to our hotel for dinner.
Today we check out of the Hotel Pietra di Luna and our coach will transfer to the airport for our return flight back to the UK. Depending on flight times we may have some time at disposal for some last minute shopping and sightseeing.
