Renowned for its the sparkling waters, peace and serenity, Lake Maggiore is nestled against the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps. Basking within the centre of the Lake are the beautiful Borromean Islands. This archipelago of tiny islets has been a paradise retreat for centuries and boasts landscaped parks, elaborate 17th-century architecture and botanical gardens. The peaceful town of Stresa is situated on the western shores of the Lake. A favourite of travellers to the lake region, Stresa has much to offer including the vast tree lined Piazza Marconi and the famous Villa Ducale, the former residence of the philosopher Antonio Rosmini, dating back to 1770.
Fly from the UK to Italy. On arrival there will be a welcome by our local guide and driver and transferred to the hotel. We will be based here for the next 5 nights on a half board basis.
After breakfast there will be a guided coach tour of the three Lakes: Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Lugano. Renowned for its serenity, Lake Maggiore is nestled against the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps with the beautiful Borromean Islands basking within its centre. Lake Como is arguably the most scenic of the lakes. Sure to leave a lasting impression, its temperate climate provides the perfect conditions for its luscious vegetation, reminiscent of the Mediterranean coast. Lake Lugano is the smallest of the lakes and the only one with a bridge connecting the towns of Melide and Bisonne. Most of the lake lies in Switzerland but its main city, Lugano – very modern and trendy – retains the Italian culture. At the eastern end of the lake, all in Italy, Porlezza is the main town which sits in a beautiful setting and a popular resort destination. We take dinner at our hotel.
After breakfast we head to Lake Orta for a guided tour. It is considered the most romantic lake in Italy and the least visited, but most definitely a gem. We first stop in Omegna to enjoy a special view of the lake, set between the mountains. We then have free time to visit the town of Orta San Giulio, full of characteristically narrow streets, a pretty church, lovely al fresco cafes and restaurants and a small harbour. Above the town is Sacro Monte di Orta where 21 chapels were built between the end of the 16th and the end of the 18th centuries with frescos and sculptures of terracotta about the life of St Francis. There is a small train that can take you to these Chapels if you do not wish to walk up the steep hill. We return to our hotel for dinner.
After breakfast we will have a guided tour of the Borromean Islands. This archipelago of tiny islets has been a paradise retreat for centuries and boasts landscaped parks, elaborate 17th-century architecture and botanical gardens. We include admission to the spectacular Isola Bella Palace and Gardens. The Palace is rich in sumptuous rooms filled with paintings and ornate furniture. Particular highlights are the domed “Salone delle Feste”, the “Sala da Ballo” (Ballroom) and the “Sala della Musica” (Music Room) which houses valuable musical instruments. The spectacular gardens are laid across ten terraces and include an open air theatre with statues depicting the four elements. We return to our hotel for dinner.
Today we have the entire day to ourselves to spend in Stresa. Dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast we check out of our hotel with a free time, flight times permitting, before returning to the airport for the return flight.
