Travel with us on this twin centre tour to the region they are now calling ‘The New Tuscany’ and get a taste of the real Italy. Given the vastness of the region the tour will be based in two cities in order to take in as much of this beautiful and unspoilt hidden treasure as possible.
We depart on our flight to Italy. We will be met by our guide and coach to transfer us to the Hotel Imperial for the next 4 nights. Dinner (including a glass of wine) at the hotel, this evening.
After breakfast we travel to the neighbouring region of Emilia Romagna for a guided tour of stunning Ravenna. This city is a treasure trove of art, history and culture of the highest order with ancient origins. It is most famous for its superb Byzantine 5th and 6th C mosaics, considered the finest outside of Istanbul. Included will be highlights of the city : Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, Cathedral of San Vital & Galla Placidia Mausoleum, and Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. We return to our hotel this evening. Dinner at leisure.
Today we visit San Leo, Montefiorentino and Sassocorvaro. San Leo is home to centuries of art, history and a spectacular fortress, which we will visit. (There is a steep, but short, climb to get to the fortress.) We continue on to Montefiorentino for its beautiful medieval Franciscan convent. We visit its church (entrance fee included) for the “Cappella dei Conti Oliva”, with its tiled floor and splendid example of Tuscan art , and the altar masterpiece by Giovanni Santi. There will be time to relax in the medieval town of Sassocorvaro before returning to our hotel. Dinner at leisure.
After breakfast we head to the Renaissance town of Urbino, the setting for one of the most impressive Ducal Palaces, built by the Montefeltro Dynasty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will meet our local guide here. This morning we tour The Ducal Palace which was built during the 15thC by the Duke of Urbino Federico da Montefeltro, and is a symbol of Renaissance. It now houses National Gallery of Le Marche which is full of paintings, frescoes, sculptures, furniture, tapestries, drawings and engravings: all created between the 14thC & 17thC. Urbino is also the birthplace of Raphael whose family home is now a museum. There will be some free time in the afternoon before returning to our hotel. Dinner at leisure.
We depart our hotel and transfer south to Ripatransone. This morning we stop in Jesi to visit the Roccoco Palace which is now an art gallery (entrance included). Jesi is a thriving and elegant town, boasting a sophisticated old centre. We continue to Loreto for lunch (not included). This afternoon we visit the Buonaccorsi Villa Gardens. The villa sits on the crest of a hill with the hanging, south-facing garden of five terraces laid out behind it. This charming garden was altered in the 18thC but retains the character, and perhaps the features, from the 15thC. Buonaccorsi also has mosaic stonework, statues and stunning views. We arrive in time to check in and relax before dinner at I Calanchi Hotel.
We will have a relaxing morning visit to Montefiore dell’Aso. Historical sights you may wish to visit here include the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Francis, housing the sepulchers of Cardinal Gentile Partino (1310) and painter Adolfo de Carolis, while the apses has frescoes by the Master of Offida. We head to the coast for a lunch at a local trattoria (included). A local wine tasting will follow prior to returning to the hotel for dinner.
After breakfast we visit Ascoli Piceno for a guided tour. The town is the jewel of the area, with its majestic Piazza del Popolo, one of the most elegant provincial squares in Italy. The equally beautiful Piazza Aringo is also worth a visit, flanked by the Duomo which contains a magnificent crypt, and the Town Hall where you will find the Pinacoteca Civica (entrance fee included); Ascoli’s art gallery that exhibits works by major artists and the 13thC cape of Pope Nicholas IV, a dazzling piece of embroidery made in England. Time to enjoy the town at your leisure before dinner at our hotel.
