Oranmore Lodge Hotel
Full of character and charm, the family run Oranmore Lodge Hotel is a traditional, country-style hotel conveniently located 7km from Galway city. The original manor house was built in circa 1850 and it has been tastefully extended. Each of the 68 bedrooms are decorated in warm shades and equipped with TV, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel has 2 restaurants and a warm and welcoming bar. The excellent leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna, spa bath, & steam room.
Day 1 – Travel to Ireland to arrive in time for dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 – Aran Islands. This morning we visit the magnificent Aran Islands which have a desolate beauty and rugged charm. There are three islands – Inishmore, Inisheer and Inishmaan. These islands have a limestone landscape and are criss-crossed by hundreds of miles of dry stone walls. The friendly islanders have maintained a traditional lifestyle, speaking Gaelic in everyday conversation and are best-known for their Aran sweaters and quality knitwear. We take a 40 minute crossing on the ferry from the village of Ros a’ Mhil. On arrival into the harbour of Kilronan we get on a minibus tour (coaches are unable to travel to the islands) with a local guide. The highlight is Dun Aengus, a 2000 year old fort perched on the edge of a 60m cliff top. Please note that sturdy footwear is recommended, as the path to the fort is quite steep and partly follows some uneven ground. After this spectacular day we head back to Oranmore for dinner.
Day 3 – Galway. This morning we make a short drive to the colourful medieval city of Galway, one of Ireland’s largest and most vibrant cities. We begin with a morning guided tour of this fascinating city, followed by free time. During our visit we can explore the shops in Eyre Square, visit the historic cathedral, take a look at the fine 14th century townhouse known as Lynch’s Castle or walk the medieval walls around the city. Galway offers plenty to see and do and has an outstanding reputation for great seafood and a remarkable history to discover!
Day 4 – Connemara National Park. Today we make our way to the Connemara National Park for a full day tour of one of the wildest and most beautiful regions in the whole of Ireland, with a rugged interior of shimmering lakes, peaceful valleys and mysterious bogs. We make an afternoon lunch stop at the Victorian town of Clifden, famous for being the location for the first wireless telegraphy station, transmitting across the Atlantic to Nova Scotia for the first time in 1907. We will then travel to Kylemore Abbey to discover the beauty, history and romance of one of Ireland’s most intriguing estates located in the heart of the Connemara countryside. Today Kylemore Abbey is owned and run by the Benedictine community who have been in residence here since 1920 and boasts Ireland’s largest walled garden. While at the Abbey we can also visit the Garden Tea House and craft and design shop selling Kylemore Abbey Pottery and award winning chocolates handmade by the Benedictine nuns. Return to our hotel for dinner.
Day 5 – Depart the hotel and Ireland for the return journey home.
