Morning visit to the famous Hereford Cathedral and world renowned Mappa Mundi. Built on a place of worship used since Saxon times, Hereford Cathedral contains some of the finest examples of architecture from the Norman period to the present day, including the Shrine of St. Thomas of Hereford, the recently restored Lady Chapel and the award-winning 20th century New Library Building. It also houses the 13th Century Mappa Mundi – the largest medieval map of the world in existence, but so much more than just a map, think of it as a social snapshot of 13th Century faith and history. Time for lunch in Hereford before an afternoon guided tour of the Black and White Trail. This 40 mile circular route leads west from the ancient town of Leominster through some of the loveliest countryside in England, taking in picturesque black and white villages on the way. Dinner at hotel.
Morning visit to Hampton Court Gardens and Parkland. The 15th Century Hampton Court Castle is surrounded by 1000 acres of stunning parkland, pasture and woodlands with the river Lugg running alongside, and predates Hampton Court Palace by some 80 years. This afternoon return to Hereford for some time to enjoy all the city has to offer. Whether that’s strolling alongside the crystal clear waters of the River Wye, enjoying the vibrant centre of High Town, browsing the shops or immersing yourself in the fantastic local history and historic architecture. Dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast, visit Hereford’s Cider Museum and explore the story of traditional cider making – how the apples were milled and pressed and how the resulting juice was fermented to produce cider. A tour of the Museum reveals the history of cider making and exhibits include a 300 year-old French Beam Press, a rare collection of English lead crystal cider glasses dating from 1730 and a collection of watercolours depicting the different types of apples and pears grown. There will be the opportunity of walking through original champagne cider cellars and viewing a cooper’s workshop and vat house, and of curse sampling the goods! En route back to your home area there will be a stop at a town / sight of interest.
