Hidden Gems in Three Counties
4 days from £435 per person*
*based on sharing on a twin/double basis and a minimum of 40 paying passengers
In this tour we centre on the County of Rutland which is described as ‘Much in Little’, and punches way above its weight as an area to visit. It is the smallest English county, a hidden gem in the East Midlands – just 18 miles by 17, and there you can find a scenic slice of England bursting with things to see and do. But also we venture across the borders into Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire too! There are stone-built villages as pretty as the Cotswolds, a man-made lake as big as Windermere, beautiful historic houses bursting with art and treasures, market towns, specialist shops and more in our tour. With a very comfortable hotel as our base, lunches on most days included and some unique visits this tour will be full of interest and variety.
We depart local pick up points for Northamptonshire. We stop at Coton Manor Garden in Northamptonshire. Described as a peaceful quintessential English Country garden occupying a hillside position extending down from the 17th century manor house, constructed of mellow Northamptonshire stone. Landscaped on different levels, it comprises a series of distinctive smaller gardens, providing variety and interest throughout the season, and enhanced by flowing streams, fountains and ponds. Here we will have time to wander round this delightful garden with a light lunch (included). Then in the early afternoon we make our way to the hotel. There will be a welcome drink prior to dinner.
This morning a visit to nearby Burghley House, home of the Cecil family for over 400 years, and now one of the great treasure houses of Britain. During our private tour we’ll see one of the largest collections of Italian art in this country, superb 18th century furniture and unique examples of Chinese and Japanese porcelain. After the visit we make our way to Stamford where we shall have some free time for lunch and then afterwards a tour of this fine delightful market town with a Blue Badge Guide. A joyous coincidence of geography and geology has allowed Stamford to remain the “finest stone town in England”. We then return to our hotel for dinner.
In the morning we have a private cruise (including coffee) on Rutland Water (actually over the border in Lincolnshire). Rutland Water is a large, horseshoe-shaped reservoir set within three thousand acres of beautiful English countryside on the borders of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. We will stop off on the south shore to explore the building that was saved from the waves and became the landmark of the reservoir -Normanton Church. Then we shall go over the border again this time into Cambridgeshire to Island Hall. Island Hall is an elegant riverside mansion built in the late 1740s. The house is situated in 3 acres of gardens including an ornamental Saxon island in the river Great Ouse. Island Hall is a family run private home and all tours are given by a member of the family. Here we shall have a light lunch (included) followed by a tour of the house and gardens. After some free time we shall return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast we check out. Before heading home we stop at Nether Winchendon House for a light lunch and tour. Nether Winchendon House is one of the most romantic of the ancient historic houses in England. It is set in seven acres of tranquil Gardens and surrounded by 600 acres of Parkland, on the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire border. We then return to our original pick up points by early evening.
