The city of Liverpool boasts UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its impressive waterfront and commercial port. Brimming with iconic sights and world famous arts and culture, it’s no surprise that Liverpool is becoming more and more popular. Our 5-day tour incorporates the highlights of the city, including the Albert Docks, the Walker Art Gallery and St George’s Hall as well as some of the nearby places of interest such as The Lady Lever Art Gallery. Our final day will bring us to Salford Quays, Manchester to see works of the famed LS Lowry.
Day 1 – We make our way to Liverpool by coach, visiting a National Trust property of choice en route. We arrive at our hotel early evening. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 – After breakfast we meet our local guide for a tour of Liverpool where we’ll see the St George’s Hall, widely regarded as one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world, Pier Head and the Three Graces – otherwise known as The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and The Port of Liverpool Building. We visit the modern Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral and the neo-gothic Anglican Cathedral, as well as the Walker Art Gallery. Its vast collections include European art dating from the 13th to the 20th century, containing works by Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas.
Day 3 – After breakfast we cross the Mersey by ferry. Our coach will meet us and transfer us to Port Sunlight Village. This 19th century village was built by William Hesketh Lever for the workers in his soap factory, and is today a conservation area. Here we will have a guided tour and and a visit to the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The Lady Lever Art Gallery displays Lord Leverhulme’s art collection that he dedicated to his wife. Amongst the exhibits is an outstanding collection of 18th century English furniture, Wedgwood and Chinese porcelain and various antique tapestries.
Day 4 – Today we visit the National Trust property of Speke Hall, a rare Tudor timber-framed manor house on the banks of the River Mersey. Restored in the 19th century, it is a unique mix of Tudor simplicity and Victorian eloquence.
This afternoon we head back to Liverpool for time at the Albert Docks and the chance to visit the Tate and the Maritime Museum.
Day 5 – After breakfast we check out of our hotel rooms and we then head to Salford Quays, home to the Lowry Centre & The Imperial War Museum North. The Lowry Centre houses an impressive collection of L.S Lowry’s work, as well as offering numerous theatres and cafes. The Imperial War Museum North overlooks the Manchester Ship Canal, an area that was heavily bombed during the 1940s Blitz and its design is a metaphor for a world shattered by war. We continue home with suitable comfort stops en route.
