Join us on a tour that encompasses the best of Norfolk. Full of historical architecture, our tour of Norwich takes us through the cobbled streets to the Norman cathedral and the 12th century castle, museum and fine arts gallery. We include a visit to the Queen’s much-loved country retreat, Sandringham Estate, explore the grandeur of Holkham Hall and enjoy a scenic cruise on the Norfolk Broads.
Day 1 – We set off for Norwich with a stop, en route, at Flatford Mill. Set in the heart of beautiful Dedham Vale in Suffolk, Flatford is a charming hamlet for which many of John Constable’s paintings were the focal point. Here we will enjoy a guided tour to learn about Constable’s association with the area. Time permitting we will visit Bridge Cottage. We continue to our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 – After breakfast we will meet our Blue Badge Guide for a morning walking tour of Norwich. Norwich, the most complete medieval city in Britain, has a magnificent cathedral, Norman castle, cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and the delightful old Watergate down by the riverside. There will be a guided tour of Norwich Cathedral as well as a visit to Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. The Castle was built by the Normans as a royal fortification over 900 years ago, with significant alterations made in the 1800s. Now a museum and art gallery, it is home to collections of fine art, archaeology and natural history. We return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3 – Today we visit Sandringham Estate, the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty The Queen, and a private residence of four generations of British monarchs since 1862. The house is set in 24 hectares of well-kept gardens. The estate has a mixed landscape including tidal mudflats, woodland, livestock and fruit farms. There are knowledgeable guides in every room of the house, while the museum displays collections of Royal vehicles, rare ceramics, photographs and memorabilia. Don’t miss the parish church of St Mary Magdalene with its carved and painted angels and its royal memorials. The restaurant and Stables Tea Room offer refreshments. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 – Today we visit Holkham Hall Estate, a privately owned and lived-in family home. The house has many highlights including Roman sculptures from the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, 22 Old Masters, and wonderful large Brussels tapestries from the end of the 17th century. The Bygones Museum has exhibitions of domestic and agricultural memorabilia and complements the grandeur of the Hall. Refreshments are available at the Stables Café. We return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 5 – This morning we check-out of our hotel and enjoy a cruise on the Norfolk Broads. Our cruise includes live commentary and light refreshments are available on-board. We then return to our local area with a stop at Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum en route. The house, grounds, studio and garden café are set in 40 acres of countryside. The Tudor and Georgian building of Castle House is the former home of Sir Alfred Munnings, and exhibits the largest collection of his paintings. We arrive home early evening.
Private evening Broads Cruises, with dinner, are also available.
