Castles, gardens and historic homes, together with unique moorland and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty all combine to make this part of England an unmissable one to visit. Thanks to its long and proud history, the unique value of the region’s most beautiful and captivating historic sites have been recognised around the world.
Day 1 – We depart our local area for the journey to Northumbria. Comfort stops will be made along the way, or possibly a visit a National Trust property or town of interest (dependent on route). Dinner will be served at our hotel this evening.
Day 2 – This morning we visit the National Trust property of Cragside. Built in 1863 as a modest two-storey country lodge set above a forest garden, it was the first house in the world to use hydroelectric power. Since then Cragside has been extended using designs by Richard Norman Shaw, transforming it into an elaborate Tudor-style mansion. This afternoon we make our way to Wallington House & Gardens, where we can take lunch (not included) before taking a guided tour of the impressive house and exploring the gardens at leisure. The central hall of the house is adorned with pre-Raphaelite paintings depicting the history of Northumberland. Surrounding the house is an informal landscape of lawns, lakes, woodland, and a hidden walled garden. Return to hotel. Dinner at hotel.
Day 3 – Today will be spent in and around the beautiful city of Durham. We will take a tour of Durham Cathedral, one of the greatest Norman buildings in England. Known for its outstanding architecture, the tour will give you an insight to the history and working life of the Cathedral. We then enjoy an interesting and informative walking tour of the city, followed by time to explore at leisure before travelling the short distance to Ushaw College, one of North East England’s true hidden gems. Ushaw College was founded over two hundred years ago and has a rich and fascinating history, with some of the finest Georgian and Victorian Gothic architecture in the North East. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 – After breakfast we travel to Alnwick Castle & Gardens. There has been a castle recorded on this site for 1,000 years and has undergone many changes from a simple Motte & Bailey arrangement to the palatial family home it is today. For the last 700 years, Alnwick Castle has been home to the Percy family and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the UK. The Alnwick Gardens have a long history under the Dukes of Northumberland, and have recently been revived to feature many different themes and influences. The centrepiece is the Grand Cascade, a magnificent tumbling mass of water, ending in an eruption of fountains sending 350 litres of water into the air every second. A computer system synchronises four sensational displays that offer a true visual treat. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 5 – Checking out of our hotel we travel to the Bowes Museum. The Bowes Museum is housed in Barnard Castle and has an impressive art collection including paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya and Francois Boucher together with a sizable collection of ceramics, textiles, tapestries and clocks. The early works of French glassmaker Émile Gallé were commissioned by Joséphine, wife of the founder John Bowes. A great attraction is the 18th century Silver Swan automaton, which periodically preens itself, looks round and appears to catch and swallow a fish. After the visit we continue the journey back to our local area.
