This morning we board our coach and make our way to London for a visit to the Houses of Parliament where we shall learn of the building’s 1,000 year history. The Houses of Parliament were once the official residence of the English royal family. The oldest part was completed in 1097 but most of the building was destroyed in the 1834 fire. The current building now houses some of the nation’s greatest works of art from the Victorian era to the present day. We continue to our hotel arriving in time for dinner.
After breakfast we will begin our day with a visit to Strawberry Hill, one of England’s most eccentric houses. It is a Gothic Revival villa designed by Horace Walpole in 1749 which began as a small 17th century house transformed into a ‘Gothic castle’. It has recently reopened to the public after a £9 million refurbishment. This afternoon we visit Royal Botanic Kew Gardens – the world’s most famous garden and a World Heritage Site. Stroll a soaring walkway amid tree canopies and wander through extensive gardens under glass, enjoy the art galleries, a serene lake and waterlily ponds. A lovely way to spend an afternoon. Dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast we travel to London for a Dickensian tour of the city. We shall take a look at Victorian London through the eyes of Charles Dickens and visit some of the places where he lived and which he brought to life in his novels. In the afternoon we visit Eltham Palace, an unoccupied royal residence handed over to English Heritage, and restored in 1999. It is referred to as a ‘masterpiece of modern design’ thanks to its Art Deco interior. Highlights include a stunning entrance hall and the magnificent medieval Great Hall. Dinner at our hotel.
This morning we head to the city again for a guided tour of Westminster Abbey, a gothic structure where Monarchs have been crowned and buried since 1066. Following this there will be time at leisure to explore and enjoy London on our own. Dinner by independent arrangement.
This morning we check out of our hotel. We begin with a visit to Runnymede RAF Memorial, a tribute to the thousands of men and women of the RAF who died in the Second World War. We continue to Windsor Castle, built after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. The castle is notable for its long association with the British royal family and for its architecture. Its lavish, early 19th-century State Apartments are superb. The castle includes the 15th-century St George’s Chapel. We shall then resume our return journey with comfort stops en route and drop off at our original departure points.
