Famous for its blue skies, warm autumns, Greek ruins, cultural diversity, gastronomic delights and fabulous scenery, Sicily has so much to offer. Due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean, Sicily has been influenced by the Greeks, Normans, Phoenicans and the Moors, each leaving their mark, and providing a rich collection of stunning temples, churches, medieval towns and hidden gems.
Day 1 – Our flight departs selected UK airports for our flight to Italy. Upon arrival we are met by our guide and transferred to our hotel for the next 5 nights.
Day 2 – After breakfast we head to the delightful town of Taormina to enjoy its tiny streets, the cathedral and the beautifully preserved 3rd century B.C. Greek amphitheatre (entrance included). Taormina has a charming atmosphere, and offers history and culture, as well as elegant squares, churches, shops, cafès and pastry shops.
Day 3 – Today we visit Syracuse & Noto. Noto is, quite simply, the apotheosis of Baroque town planning and architecture. All the buildings have their own unique fascinating design as the architects seem to have been given free reign. Highlights include The Monastero del Santissimo Salvatore with its graceful tower, the Church of San Francesco and Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata. Syracuse, Once home to Archimedes, the city is divided into two parts: an archaeological site and the peninsula of Ortigia. The archaeological site contains a great number of Greek and Roman remains including a Greek theatre from the 5thC BC.
Day 4 – Today we enjoy the day at leisure to explore this elegant resort.
Day 5 – Today we see the real ‘hidden Sicily’ including some of the most breath-taking hilltop villages Sicily has to offer. We visit the village of Savoca, with its stunning hillside setting overlooked by the ruined castle – Castello di Pentefur. Highlights include Bar Vitelli, an attractive building called Palazzo Trimarchi, featured in ‘The Godfather’ and Cappuccini Monastery with its impressive collection of 32 ancient mummified monks in their catacombs. After a local wine tasting we continue onto another ‘hidden’ gem, Forza d’Agro. This graceful medieval village offers splendid views of the creek-indented coast, notably from the terrace of the Piazza del Municipio. After some time at leisure experience the local cuisine with a fabulous 3 course lunch including unlimited local wine.
Day 6 – Today we say farewell as we board our coach and travel back to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
