As the cultural and economic centre of Wales, the vibrant city of Cardiff has seen significant development. With a new waterfront area at Cardiff Bay we will learn about the Welsh Assembly Building and be able to admire the Millennium Centre with its trademark armadillo-shaped bronze roof. On this trip we shall also explore some of the city’s most fascinating sights including beautiful Cardiff Castle, the National Museum, Art Gallery of Wales and the highly recommend Royal Mint Visitors Centre.
Day 1 – We depart our local area for Cardiff with an en route stop at a National Trust property of your choice. Alternatively visit St Fagan’s National History Museum, one of Europe’s foremost open-air museums. It stands within the grounds of St Fagan’s Castle, a late 16th century manor house donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. We will arrive at our hotel in time to check in and relax before dinner.
Day 2 – After breakfast our guide will join us for our day in Cardiff. There will be a coach tour, a visit to the Welsh Parliament where we will be shown around the Senedd and the unique landmark building; Mermaid Quay; the iconic Millennium Centre and Cardiff Castle for a guided tour. This is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions with 2,000 years of history beginning as a Roman fort. The 3rd Marquess transformed the Castle into a Welsh Victorian Camelot and the 4th Marquess later completed many of the restoration projects, including the reconstruction of the Roman wall. The Bute family continued to stay at the Castle throughout the 1920s and 1930s but, following the death of the 4th Marquess of Bute, it was donated to the City of Cardiff.
Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 – Today we head out of the city to Royal Mint Experience. The £9m interactive visitor centre showcases the fascinating history and manufacture of the coins we use every day and gives unprecedented access to the inner workings of a 1000-year-old organisation at the home of official UK coin production. This afternoon, returning to Cardiff we visit the National Museum of Cardiff and Gallery. The gallery houses one of Europe’s finest collections of art, including five hundred years of magnificent paintings, drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics from Wales and across the world. The museum is also home to one of Europe’s best collections of Impressionist Art. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 – This morning we will check out of our hotel for our homeward journey. En route we visit the National Trust’s Dyrham Park, the spectacular late 17th century baroque mansion, garden and deer park set in 274 acres of gardens and parkland. Here we will have lunch (not included) before resuming our journey, with suitable comfort stops along the way, and drop off at original departure points.
