Leuven & Dinant

Belgium

Gothic landmarks dominate these compact, lively towns

Tradition holds strong in Leuven, a Flemish town known for its characterful historic core. Beautiful old buildings dominate the streets, but the jewel in the crown is the 15th century town hall: an awe-inspiring landmark defined by ornate turrets and a wild assortment of intricate detail. Opposite, the Gothic spikes of St Peter’s Church conceal Dieric Bouts’ painting The Last Supper. Also home to the oldest Catholic university still in existence, the student population keeps this old town lively – as do its bars and cafés. Leuven is the brewing capital of Belgium (no small feat in a country so well known for its beer!) and home to the Stella Artois HQ.

The town of Dinant, close to the French border, sits along the River Meuse under the protection of its intriguing clifftop citadel. The citadel (now a museum) affords magnificent views over the valley, whereas down in the town its collegiate church steals the limelight with its bold Gothic structure and bulbous dark spire. Dinant is also the home of Leffe Abbey Ale, and was the birthplace of Adolphe Sax (inventor of the saxophone).
