Lake Bled

Slovenia

A scene of Alpine perfection

The deep turquoise waters of Lake Bled encircle an impossibly picturesque island church, are backed by breathtaking emerald forests and the snow-tipped Julian Alps, and are overlooked by the medieval splendour of Bled Castle. Small, gondola-style boats known as pletna deliver visitors to the tiny island of Blejski Otok, completing this sublime scene. The paths circling the lake lead to wonderful viewpoints and quaint cafés, where you can indulge with a slice of delicious Bled cream cake. On the island, the pretty baroque pilgrimage church offers fantastic views of the surrounding lake and serene landscapes. Further afield, Slovenia’s delights include incredible gorges, intriguing caves and the vibrant city of Ljubljana.

Attractions:

Škofja Loka

Škofja-Loka-www.slovenia.info-B.-Kladnik

Škofja Loka, which means ‘Bishop’s meadow,’ is a quaint cluster of warm terracotta-roofed buildings which form one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. The excellently preserved Old Town is a labyrinth of delightful alleyways, and pretty pastel houses line the riverbank in a higgledy-piggledy jumble. Lording over the town is the fine Loka Castle, which dates back to the 13th century and houses historical and ethnographic treasures.

Postojna Caves

Postojna-Cave-White-Hall-1

The cave system at Postojna in Slovenia is an other-worldly network of subterreanean passageways and caverns that has been formed over two million years. Silent pools, dramatic stalagmites and spindly stalactites create an eerie symmetry and abstract visions, which can be discovered on the underground electric train. Highlights include a brilliant white stalagmite known as ‘the Diamond’, the swirling ‘baroque pillar’ and the cavernous ‘Great Mountain.’

Lipica Stud Farm

Horses07_Foto_Dalibor_Gregor

Lipica is the oldest stud farm in Europe, and has been continuously rearing classical horse breeds since the farm was begun in the 16th century. An exploration of the farm is a discovery of Slovenian culture and heritage, closely linked with the Habsburgs, and there are many historic artefacts on display as well as acres of beautiful parkland and pasture.

Ljubljana

Cityscape-view-on-Ljubljanica-river-canal-in-Ljubljana-old-town

Slovenia’s elegant capital is a historic city as well as a green one, with a dramatic castle erupting from the centre on a verdant hill. The Ljubljanica River rushes through the leafy heart of the city, its banks dotted with cafés and spanned by several iconic bridges. With little traffic in the centre, many museums, and beautiful architecture, this undiscovered gem is a pleasure to explore.

Alternatives

Vintgar Gorge & Triglav National Park

The dramatic Vintgar Gorge is hewn into the rock just a few kilometres away from Lake Bled, on the edge of Triglav National Park. The pretty gorge can be explored by wooden walkways and bridges, and the clear waters culminate with the Šum waterfall. The national park is named for its highest peak, Triglav, and is an Alpine paradise of lakes, waterfalls, ravines and forest.

Kranjska Gora, Vršič Pass & the Trenta Valley

Kranjska Gora is a stunningly picturesque Alpine resort. From here, traverse the spectacular Vršič Pass, which cuts across the Julian Alps offering incredible views of the mountainous landscape, and explore the Trenta Valley. The Trenta Valley sits at the heart of the Triglav National Park, laced with rivers and traditional settlements complete with wooden-roofed houses.
