Worcester & The Malverns

The city of Worcester is best known for its majestic cathedral. The building was begun in 1084, although its history dates back to the 7^th century. Architecturally magnificent, it has an ancient crypt, royal tombs, medieval cloisters, a 12^th century Chapter House and stunning stained glass which dates back to the Victorian era.

The birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar in 1857, The Firs is a charming cottage housing a museum dedicated to the great English composer of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Overlooking Elgar’s beloved Malvern Hills, the cottage features personal memorabilia, a modern visitor centre, and a delightful garden perfect for reflection.

Home to the world’s biggest collection of Worcester porcelain, the Museum of Royal Worcester charts the 250-year story of this famous porcelain brand in the place it was made. Beautiful Georgian, Victorian, and 20^th-century room settings showcase the exquisite porcelain pieces, while an audio tour shares tales of the factory.

A former home to the Bishops of Worcester for over 1000 years, today Hartlebury Castle makes for a fascinating visit, showcasing Worcestershire’s history. The Bishop’s Palace offers up talking portraits and opulent State Rooms as well as the Hurd Library, quite unique with its original shelves from 1782 and a fine collection of books. Much is revealed in captivating tales about former occupants during the guided tour. This former manor house also features delightful grounds, including an historic moat and a perimeter walk.

Discover the grand and fascinating ruins of what was once one of the great country houses of England. Originally a medieval manor and then a Jacobean mansion, Witley was dramatically remodelled in the mid-19^th century in a grand, Italianate style before being completely devastated by a fire in 1937. Today, the ruin remains deeply evocative of Victorian grandeur, and the formal gardens have been beautifully restored.

Pretty Great Malvern is a largely Victorian town, but its history stretches back much further. The Great Malvern Priory is a wonderfully restored, Grade-I listed building with a history beginning in 1085. It operated as a priory for over 450 years, and today is a parish church. It has many interesting architectural features, including a well-preserved collection of medieval wall tiles.

Set in picturesque rural Worcestershire at the foot of the Malvern Hills, Madresfield Court has been in the same family for over 900 years. Rich in history with records dating back to 1120, this stunning building is home to fine examples of Arts and Crafts decoration from the 1880-1920 period, which celebrated craftmanship and design inspired by nature.
