Monmouthshire makes an interesting and different destination base. From here we discover the beautiful countryside of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as well as the bright lights of the Welsh Capital City. There are also many other places that are within easy reach such as Ross-on-Wye and the beautiful Forest of Dean which can easily be substituted for any of the days should you prefer.
Departing our local area this morning we make our way to Wales and our hotel. On arrival we enjoy a welcome tea/coffee as our luggage is taken to our room. We have time to settle in prior to dinner this evening.
After breakfast this morning we make our way to the Big Pit National Coal Museum. Here we get a fascinating insight into the life of a miner as we visit a real coal mine and one of Britain’s leading mining museums. Set into the hillside above the colliery, the galleries house simulated underground workings and multi media presentations telling the story of how the Welsh mining industry evolved. For the more adventurous there is also the opportunity to take a guided tour of the ‘Big Pit’ which involves taking a lift down into a mine shaft.
A scenic day is in store as we make our way to the Brecon Beacons National Park. Established in 1957 it was the third of the Welsh parks after Snowdonia and the Pembrokeshire Coast. We see Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales and enjoy the beautiful ruggedness of the park. Stopping in the traditional mid wales market town of Brecon, there is time to enjoy some lunch before we join our canal boat for a 2½ hour cruise along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Hugging the mountainside above the valley of the River Usk there are fine views and an abundance of wildlife to be seen throughout the four seasons.
Enjoy a guided tour of Cardiff this morning to give us an insight into the history of the Welsh capital. We enjoy the sights of the impressive Cardiff Castle, magnificent Llandaff Cathedral and the world famous Millennium Stadium. There will also be time to explore the newly regenerated Waterfront area which overlooks Cardiff Bay and is home to the Welsh Parliament, a Norwegian Church and the Wales Millennium Centre. There will be ample time to explore at your leisure before returning to our hotel later this afternoon.
After breakfast we leave our hotel and make our way home.
