Discover Puglia, a land of striking landscapes, diverse influences and wonderful cuisine. The vast coastline bears historical marks of many conquering invaders. However, Puglia has retained its own distinct and authentic identity. Based near the UNESCO World Heritage town of Alberobello, our tour allows us to explore important historic towns including Lecce, Matera, Monopoli and Polignano.
Day 1 – Depart the UK for our flight to Italy. On arrival we will be met by our local guide and coach for the transfer to the hotel. After check-in we have time to relax before dinner. Dinner is included each evening.
Day 2 – After breakfast we will enjoy a morning guided tour of the UNESCO town of Alberobello, famous for its unusual cone-shaped Trulli houses, unique to the area. This afternoon we continue to Locorontondo for a guided tour and a wine tasting. Locorontondo is known for its wines and for its round historical centre from which derives its name. It is the perfect place for wandering around, taking photographs and sitting at little cafes watching the world go by.
Day 3 – This morning we travel to Lecce for a guided tour. After Lecce became part of the Kingdom of Naples, it grew to become the liveliest cultural area of the Mediterranean, giving life to its own architectural style; the Barocco Leccese. This unique style is characterised by the richness in its décor. The Basilica di Santa Croce is not to be missed.
Day 4 – Today we visit Matera, another UNESCO World Heritage site. A maze of cave dwellings and churches built at the end of the first millennium have miraculously remained largely intact. There will be time to enjoy the town or visit the local museums such as the Medieval Art museum or the modern art sculpture gallery.
Day 5 – Day at leisure. The hotel’s shuttle bus into Alberobello will be available on request for those wishing to make use of it.
Day 6 – After breakfast we visit the Castellana Caves* then continue to Monopoli with lunch at a local restaurant. Castellana Caves began to form around 90 million years ago and include stalactites, stalagmites, canyons and caves. We will continue to Monopoli and take time to explore the town. Monopoli extends along the Adriatic coast and features the Castle of Carlo V, an Aragon fort built upon a Benedictine Monastery. We enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Polignano a Mare. The town was once an important trading port and traces of Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman influences can still be seen.
Day 7 – Today we visit a local olive oil mill and masseria, where we will taste olive oils and experience a mozzarella-making demonstration. We return to Alberobello early afternoon for the rest of the day at leisure and our farewell dinner.
Day 8 – After breakfast we check out of our hotel and visit Castel del Monte. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by Frederick II in the mid 13th century, the castle is octagonal in shape with each corner featuring an octagonal tower. We continue to the airport for our return flight to the UK.
Exact order of the itinerary is subject to change and dependant of flight times.
