Austria – Beauty on the ‘Edge of the World’

7 days from £759 per person*

  • Salzburg

The Austrian Lake Region is a picture-book region of outstanding beauty, where jagged, snow-capped peaks tower above serene lakes, green meadows and onion-domed churches. For lovers of the great outdoors, Austria is a natural paradise just waiting to be discovered. Historic cities steeped in centuries of tradition, majestic mountain peaks and sweeping meadows, crystal-clear lakes and fascinating attractions – Austria remains a favourite destination! With its central location, the lakeside location of St Wolfgang is the ideal starting point for trips to the city of Salzburg and to the beautiful Salzburgerland and Salzkammergut regions. Based at the Hotel Forsterhof, we’ll discover these wonderful locations and enjoy the stunning scenery that this region of Austria has to offer.

Day 1
Our flight departs from selected UK airports. Upon arrival we are met by our guide and transferred to our hotel in the Austrian Lake District for the next 6 nights.

Day 2
Today we enjoy a day in St. Wolfgang. After a short guided walk with the hotel manager, she will escort us to the station for our return journey on the Schafberg Mountain Railway. Michael Portillo said this was the ‘most memorable’ of the railways he rode with, lakes and mountains of ‘astonishing beauty’ in a ‘strange looking locomotive’. In 40 minutes it travels just over 3½ miles but climbs 3,930ft and upon reaching the top there is a surprise as from the station there is a walk of approx. 200 yards to a hotel, he didn’t realise until he got there the hotel was built on a sheer cliff 5,870 ft. above St Wolfgang, ‘It is here’ he says ‘that you feel as though you have come to the edge of the world’!

Day 3
Today our journey today takes us to home of the ‘Sound of Music’ and regional capital, Salzburg. The old town is a maze of charming pedestrian alleyways with many famous and historic landmarks, Mozart’s Birthplace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the beautiful Mirabell Gardens to name just a few. To enable us to get our bearings we have a 2 hour guided walking tour after which we can explore at our leisure.

Day 4
Our destinations today are, firstly, the delightful spa town of Bad Ischl. Originally where the Emperors of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy spent their summers, we visit what was their ‘heaven on earth’, the Kaiservilla. It is here we have included a guided tour. After, there is time to explore the centre before our visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt. The village enjoys fabulous views from the lake shore and was originally inaccessible by road.

Day 5
Today we enjoy the complete day at leisure to explore St Wolfgang.

Day 6
Today will include a scenic drive of the Salzkammergut, known as the Austrian Lake District. We leave Lake Wolfgang behind us as we pass Lake Traunsee stopping at Gmunden for free time and perhaps an opportunity to purchase some of their ceramic pottery. From here we pass Lake Attersee en route to Lake Mondsee, one of the most unspoilt lakes in the region. In Mondsee we will have the chance to visit one of the most well known film locations from the Sound of Music film, the little church where the wedding between Maria and the Captain takes place. We continue from here back to the shores of Lake Wolfgang to the traffic free village of St Gilgen where Mozart’s mother was born and whose sister Nannerl lived after her marriage.

Day 7
Today we say farewell to the beautiful area as we board our coach and travel back to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
