Overview

Historic cities steeped in centuries of enchanting tradition, majestic Tyrolean peaks and sweeping meadows, crystal-clear lakes and fascinating attractions.

The Austrian Tyrol is a picture-book region of outstanding beauty, where jagged, snowcapped peaks tower above fast-flowing rivers, green meadows and onion-domed churches. It is a paradise for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors, offering breathtaking walking and excursions that include a nostalgic cog train journey, a scenic boat cruise, a journey along the panoramic Gerlos Pass and stunning Tratzberg Castle.

Itinerary

Day 1
We depart from our selected UK airport for our flight to Austria. Upon arrival our guide will transfer us to our coach for the journey to our hotel.

Day 2
We spend today at leisure in our lovely base of Kirchberg. Why not take a short walk to the beautiful small lake and relax by the water’s edge or browse amongst the numerous shops and cafés within the town. You can even take the cable car to the mountain summit and take a leisurely stroll.

Day 3
This morning, we journey to Jenbach, from where we join the original Lake Achen cog railway for the journey up to Seespitz. This railway dates back to 1889 and the steam engines are some of the oldest in the world still to be used for public transport. The train winds its way up above the Inn Valley to its destination, the largest Alpine lake in the Tyrol, Lake Achen. After a short opportunity for a photo stop, we join the short boat cruise cruising along the beautiful shores from Seespitz to Pertisau. Once back on dry land, we enjoy free time in the lakeside resort of Pertisau before we transfer to the magnificent and looming Tratzberg Castle. This castle, located high above the Inntal valley, is a real gem. It is one of the most beautiful castles in the Alpine area, dating back to the period between Gothic and Renaissance with an impressive square courtyard with Renaissance paintings and the wonderful Renaissance chambers.

Day 4
Today we travel via the international alpine resort of Kitzbühel and over the scenic Thurn Pass, to the neighbouring province of Salzburgerland. Our journey continues down the Salzach Valley to the pretty town of Zell am See, nestled on the shores of lovely Lake Zell. From Zell am See, we enjoy a panoramic boat cruise to marvel at the beautiful scenery, before allowing you time to wander through the medieval centre and along the lake shores.

Day 5
Today is a day completely at leisure.

Day 6
Today our journey today takes us to home of the ‘Sound of Music’ and regional capital, Salzburg. The old town is a maze of charming pedestrian alleyways with many famous and historic landmarks, Mozart’s Birthplace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the beautiful Mirabell Gardens to name just a few. To enable us to get our bearings we have a 2 hour guided walking tour after which we can explore at our leisure before returning to our hotel for dinner.

Day 7
Our journey today takes us Krimml Waterfalls. The falls are the highest in Europe and a unique natural wonder! With a height of 380m in three stages, the River Krimml feeds the falls, plunging down the mighty steps as a sub glacial stream. We then continue along the popular and panoramic Gerlos Alpine Pass. This spectacular scenic road ascends to a height of 1630m with hairpin bends offering amazing views at every turn. We descend to the Ziller valley for time at leisure in the beautiful village of Mayrhofen, one of the Tyrol’s most popular resorts, framed by the awe inspiring scenery of the majestic Zillertaler Alps.

Day 8
We check out of the hotel and journey to the airport for our flight home.
