Discover the breathtaking wealth of fine art and beautiful architecture this trip to Antwerp and Mechelen has to offer. Some of the most fascinating art in Europe is just across the English channel. Never more so than in the 16th and 17th centuries have the creative arts flourished in Antwerp, earning the city its reputation as Belgium’s most stylish. Home to great masters such as Rubens and Van Dyck, the city is known for its museums, galleries, architecture and, perhaps most famously, for its diamonds. We include an excursion to Mechelen, Belgium’s best kept secret with monuments included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. Introductory tours of both cities will give us the necessary insight into choosing the sites to visit during our free time in these two most beautiful cities of Flanders.

What to Do

  • Grote Markt, the city’s beautiful square where most of its buildings were destroyed in the 16th century then later rebuilt in Flemish Renaissance style
  • The Old Stock Exchange, also destroyed and later rebuilt during the 19th century in neo gothic style
  • Rubens’ House
  • Central Station, one of the grandest and most eclectic buildings in Antwerp built in a range of architectural styles
  • St Paul’s Church, built in 1571 but damaged in the fire as well. Now restored, its magnificent interior is again on view to the public with more than 50 paintings, 200 sculptures, splendid baroque altars and carved church furnishings which are some of the most beautiful in the world. Scores of Antwerp masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Francken, De Vos, Quellin, Kerrick, Verbruggen, etc are represented here as well
  • Carolus Borromeus church, mostly decorated with Rubens’ paintings destroyed in the fire but the beautiful apse was spared and conveys the church’s former splendour
