Lourdes is a small market town lying at the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes. Until 1858 Lourdes was a quiet, modest town with a population of only 4,000 when the events which changed its history took place. On 11 February 1858 a 14 year-old local girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed a beautiful lady appeared to her in the Grotto of Massabielle who identified herself as the “Immaculate Conception” later appearing a further 18 times. The faithful believe her to be the Blessed Virgin Mary and by 1859 thousands of pilgrims were visiting Lourdes. Since the apparitions, Lourdes has become one of the world’s leading Catholic Marian shrines and the number of visitors grows each year. It has such an important place within the Roman Catholic church that Pope John Paul II visited the shrine twice, once in 1983 and later in 2004. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI authorized special indulgences to mark the 150th anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Today we meet at the airport for our flight to France. We will be welcomed on arrival and escorted to our hotel where we will have time to relax before meeting up for dinner. We will be based here for 3 nights on a half board basis.
After breakfast we meet our guide for a tour of Lourdes depicting the life and times of Saint Bernadette. We will then transfer to the village of Bartres, the small village where Bernadette was wet-nursed by Marie Lagües and where 13 years later she returned as a farm hand. Her days were filled working on the farm, looking after the children, looking after the lambs and in the evening, Marie Lagües would teach her the Catholic Faith. We return to Lourdes to have dinner at our hotel. It is possible to join the torch lit Marian Procession which takes place every evening at 9.00 pm beginning from the Grotto and ending in the square in front of the Rosary Basilica. The welcoming of pilgrims begins at 8.45 pm. Everyone is invited to carry a candle and after the Procession, the pilgrims are invited to attend the last Mass of the day at the Grotto of the Apparition. This Mass is to give thanks for all the graces received at the Sanctuary during the day.
After breakfast we will attend the International Mass which takes place in the Underground Basilica of St. Pius X. Please note that it will be an early start to ensure a seat. The remainder of the day will be free to explore Lourdes on our own and visit the churches of preference and any of the many sites associated with the life of St Bernadette.
After breakfast we check out of our hotel and make our way to the airport for our return flight back to the UK.
