Normandy is one of the most culturally rich regions in France, known for its artistic heritage linked to the Impressionists, its powerful history spanning from Joan of Arc to a pivotal role in the Second World War and its unique regional gastronomy. With 350 miles of coastline and richly varied regions, Normandy gives the visitor a wonderful choice of landscapes, scenery and culture. Join us on our tour of Normandy where we combine a small but rich portion of what this beautiful region has to offer. From William the Conqueror to WWII, Normandy offers an abundance of history and heritage as well as warm hospitality and a unique blend of maritime traditions and rural life.
We leave our departure points to make our way to Dover or Folkestone for our crossing to Calais. We then travel to the delightful town of Honfleur where we will be based for the next 4 nights on bed & breakfast basis.
After breakfast we travel to Bayeux for a visit to the Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux which houses the world famous tapestry. The Tapestry is an embroidered strip of linen telling the story of the events starting in 1064 that led up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. We will then continue to Caen for a guided tour. The city was built during the reign of William the Conqueror and has a long and complex history. Highlights of the town include Château de Caen, built by William the Conqueror, The Peace Memorial, the Church of St Etienne, the Church of St Pierre and the Jardin Botanique de Caen, an historic botanical garden.
Today we will visit, with a specialist guide, the Landing Beaches, Battlefields and the cemeteries linked with WWII. We will first travel to Pegasus Bridge where we visit the museum and have the opportunity to take a tea/coffee break. We then drive past some of the Landing Beaches and proceed to Arromanches for a guided tour, some free time to explore on our own and the opportunity to take lunch (not included). This afternoon we will travel to Colleville-Sur-Mer, location of the American cemetery containing the remains of nearly 10,000 service men and women who died during the Normandy campaign. We continue to Longues Sur Mer, location of one of the German gun batteries and, time permitting, our day will end with a visit to Pointe du Hoc, the clifftop point of attack by the United States Army during Operation Overlord in World War II.
This morning we will have some time to enjoy our base of Honfleur. This fishing port, on the Seine estuary, is where many of the impressionist painters gathered during the last century. This pretty little port has witnessed the beginnings of nearly all of Normandy’s great seafaring adventures and is still a mecca for sailing enthusiasts. This afternoon we visit the Benedictine Palais in Fecamp, a majestic building built in 1822 in a part Gothic and part Renaissance style. It houses the Benedictine monks’ “magic” liquor which we will have the opportunity to taste after our guided tour.
After breakfast we check out of our hotel and make our way home with suitable comfort stops en route.
The exact order of excursions is subject to change.
