The Cote D’Azur has a special mix of unspoilt landscape, amazing clarity of light brought about by the nearby Alps and the Mistral wind that has been attracting artists for centuries. The Impressionists were brought first by Gustave Caillebotte and Paul Signac; Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh and Chagall all lived or spent long periods of time here. Our tour will focus on the painters and their influence in the area.
Fly from the UK to Nice. En-route to our hotel we visit the Renoir Museum in Cagnes sur Mer. This was the retreat and final home of Renoir and is set in a beautiful estate full of olive and citrus trees and a breath-taking view down the Cape of Antibes. We continue to our hotel for check-in and have time to relax before dinner.
This morning we travel to Fondation Ephrussi de Rothschild to visit the villa and gardens. The Villa is furnished as the Baroness left it in 1934, with priceless collections and items that belonged to Marie Antoinette. The lovely grounds and walks are on a promontory surrounded by the azure blue sea of the Mediterranean. We will continue to the atmospheric harbour town of Villefranche with time for lunch before heading to Vence and St. Paul de Vence where we will visit the Maeght Fondation and Chapelle du Rosaire, as well as some free time for individual exploring. Vence, famous for the Chapel decorated by Matisse, is a lovely old town and adjacent to the picturesque hill village of St-Paul-De-Vence. This smaller village was a magnet for painters, who often paid for their room and board with works of art. Return to the hotel for our evening meal.
Today we spend the day in Aix en Provence, the old capital of Provence. It is a bustling and lively city with picturesque tree-lined avenues, 17th and 18th Century buildings, and a wonderful old town with a colourful market. Home to Paul Cezanne, we will have a morning guided themed walking tour and a visit to his studio. The afternoon will be free to explore independently. You could visit the Musee Granet. This museum holds a collection of French, Italian and Flemish paintings as well as rooms devoted to local artists including a number of pieces by Cezanne. It also has sculpture & archaeological rooms. We return to the hotel for dinner.
This morning we head to Antibes, home to the 12th Century Chateau Grimaldi which now houses one of the finest Picasso collections. There will be time to visit the local market and have a coffee stop before heading to the Picasso Museum. Lunch will be taken in Antibes (not included) before continuing to Biot to visit the Fernand Leger Museum which offers a glimpse of one of the great art movements of the 20th century. Farewell meal at the hotel.
We check out of the hotel and head to Nice, known for its rich blue-green sea and lovely art deco facades. There will be a visit to the Matisse Museum which displays many of his drawings, paintings, bronzes and artefacts. Tthere will be time for lunch (not included) and a visit to the Fine Arts Museum before heading back to Nice Airport for our flight home.
